Professor Raymond Hodgkin was a man of many talents. Among his many scientific discoveries was the Hodgkin-Huxley model of the cell, the first to show the existence of intracellular structures. He wrote, together with Andrew Huxley, a classic textbook on biophysics entitled The Molecular Basis of Cell Function. But he is perhaps best known for his scientific detective work, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1963
His story is that of a brilliant physicist who worked long hours, often into the night. He was also an avid stamp collector whose collection formed an important part of the National Science Museum's permanent exhibition on science and technology in Britain.
